Project Overview:
Shikokho Secondary School (Kakamega District, KENYA) is located 3 Kilometres away from Sigalagala- Butere Road. Currently has a population of about 3500 People. Shikokho is in Shitoli Sub-location, Shirumba location, Ikolomani Division, Kakamega District in the Western Province of Kenya.
Among the problems facing this community include poverty, land shortage /over population (for subsistence farming), poor agricultural methods, clan rivalry, isolation / inaccessibility (phone, roads, power- need electricity), unemployment (jobs are far away), reliance on patronage from unreliable patrons, no clear organized economic product /activity of functional cooperative venture, High mortality /low health status -water supply not reliable and despair / alcoholism. However, the members of the community are coming up with various sub-committees to see themselves getting involved in solving the problems above. The community is coming up with various projects to see if they can be self reliant in solving their problems. Among the projects are Tree planting, Heifer (cow) farming, water, school management, the youth group (Solid Rock) and Imani and Shikokho women groups getting involved with HIV/ AIDS and the orphans among others.
Recent Accomplishments:
A student from the school earned the honor of being one of the top 100 highest scorers on the Kenyan national exam. In addition, the girls' soccer team reached the finals of the provincial ball games.

480 students, 12 staff
Number of People Indirectly Served by Project:
Approximately 5000 members of the local community are involved with school activities and programs.
Goals for 2010:
To be able to get extra classrooms as the population continues to expand
To be able to provide universal educational services
To provide quality and affordable education to the community members in a sustainable way
IPM Funding Goal for 2010:
$7000
IPM has paid for the school tuition for many orphaned children, but the project requires additional funds to be able to provide additional educational services.
Community Impact:
Peter Khamusali Ingosi, the coordinator of the program, is a former student who graduated from the school and is now giving back to the community by helping kids obtain an education.
How your donation may be put to use:
There are about 100 students who require financial aid for the $200 tuition fee, totaling $20,000. Usually each student receives a partial scholarship of 70% of the total fee, depending on the magnitude of his or her need.
Additional funds are required for amenities like extra classrooms, an administration block, and staff houses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
