Project Peanut Butter, Special Peanut Grinder Initiative
Project Coordinator:
Mary J. Manary
Project Overview:
Project Peanut Butter Grinder (Blantyre, Malawi) became an IPM partner in 2007. In 2001, Dr. Mark Manary, who currently serves as Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis founded Project Peanut Butter. Dr. Manary found that while children receive nutrition supplements when hospitalized for malnutrition, upon release from hospital, parents have limited resources to keep their children nourished. By supplying families and mothers with fortified peanut butter, which is produced by local workers from locally grown peanuts, children are able to maintain a healthy weight. Currently Project Peanut Butter (Blantyre, Malawi) provides nutrition to malnourished children by providing them with fortified peanut butter after they have been treated for malnutrition at a hospital. To date Project Peanut Butter has treated 9,000 children, and 91% of those treated have maintained a healthy weight after battling malnutrition.
Recent Accomplishments:
Continued to expand the operational feeding project (administered through local Malawians)
Continued to see successful recovery rates for the children
Began production of ready-to-use food with hand implements in the village
