Fundación Aragon

Project Overview:
Fundación Aragon (Zaragoza, EL SALVADOR) is a school for children in the El Zaite community of Zaragoza.  Many of the youth of El Zaite are children of gang members of the neighborhood, an escalating social problem in El Zaite since the 1980s.  Because the children come from families who are often at war with one another in the neighborhood, the teachers and staff of Fundación Aragon are committed to teaching peace and reconciliation, along with the standard curriculum.  The youth who attend Fundación Aragon often come from low-income families, and therefore cannot afford to attend other primary schools in the community.  Despite these difficult circumstances, the school has many assets, including a computer lab with internet access that allows the students to explore the world outside their own neighborhood, and most importantly a committed staff who is dedicated to seeing the youth succeed.

Number of People Directly Served by Project:
The school enrolls 200 students from grade one through twelve.

Goals for 2010:
To be an institution that offers a socially involved education assisting each student as a unique person, promoting their intellectual, physical, and values capacity, raising ecological awareness, developing self discipline, excellence and solidarity as a way of living with a clear commitment to social change.

IPM Funding Goal for 2010:
$3,500.00

How your donation may be put to use:
Your donation will be used to purchase the land to build a park and football court for the students as well as the community. Furthermore, we will install in the school a laboratory with equipment for the subjects of biology, physics and chemistry.
